Endocrine System and Syndromes

Treatments

Treatment of endocrine gland-related conditions depends on the cause. If the problem is due to a drug therapy, then the patient may be switched to another medication. It is important that patients do not abruptly stop taking a medication without consulting their doctor. This can cause additional, sometimes serious, complications. If the condition is due to hyperplasia, then the action of the hormone may be able to be blocked. If the condition is due to a tumor, then the tumor may be able to be surgically removed. Often this will resolve the problem or decrease the disorder to the point that it can be controlled.

In some cases, after a gland has been removed, the patient may need to take replacement medications, such as taking thyroid hormone after the thyroid gland has been removed. Replacement is also often used when a patient’s gland has been damaged or is otherwise not capable of producing a sufficient quantity of one or more hormones. When patients have a gene mutation associated with MEN-1 or MEN-2, careful lifetime monitoring may be necessary. Treatment of all endocrine-related conditions will be tailored to the individual. Patients should work with their doctor to determine the right course of action for them.
